-mails they came upon david petraeus. let's stop it here and bring in suzanne -- suzanne kelly in washington, our intelligence correspondent. suzanne, a lot of ground to cover here. we have this video that has surfaced of paula broadwell, last month, speaking at the university of denver and she's speaking here as david petraeus' biographer about the deadly attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya. let's take a listen. >> i don't know if a lot of you heard this, but the cia an annex had taken a couple prisoner and they think the attack on the consulate was an attempt to get the prisoners back. that's still being vetted. >> where did she hear that? did it come from david petraeus and do we know if her claim was true, the cia was holding captives inside a consular annex in benghazi? >> right, ted. this raises serious issues. she clearly said in the video the information she was sharing on libya and the cia holding prisoners there hadn't been vetted. so that means she is sharing something with -- that she heard with a public audience. that's concerning because they have to ask, what is your so

told about the investigation of david petraeus are getting ready to meet. that's this afternoon. a senior official is telling cnn details about general john allen's relationship with a socialite at the center of both investigations. this is a web of characters and connections that is impacting the team in charge of america's security. it is also delaying when the world will know who will be the next leader of nato. general john allen was to have a confirmation hearing this thursday on his way to becoming the supreme allied commander. that, of course, is now on hold while allen denied doing anything wrong, he is under investigation for potentially inappropriate e-mails he sent to this woman, jill kelley, the tampa socialite triggered the petraeus investigation. we'll get to exactly how in just a moment. the defense department's inspector general is going through e-mails allen and kelley sent to each other. >> the primary thing is that, you know, she wants her privacy protected. and i think that she's going to probably come out at some point and make a statement. >> privacy, of co

involving now former c.i.a. director david petraeus and his extramarital affair with the author of his biography paula broadwell. another american is now getting caught up in the whole thing and that is the top commander in afghanistan, general john allen. turns out the pentagon is now investigating him as well for sending inappropriate e-mails to jill kelly. now, if you remember from yesterday, kelly is the same woman who sparked this whole investigation because petraeus' mistress paula broadwell was sending her e-mails. allen is saying he did nothing wrong and is maintaining his current position within the military. now, many are wondering why the fbi would get involved if this is nothing more than an affair. but we're now hearing fears of potential security leaks. in a speech at the university of denver broadwell suggested the libya attack was targeting a secret prison at the benghazi consulate. federal agents have been searching broadwell's home. late last night and into early this morning. not only did she have thousa

, that jill kelley, we're talking about the same tampa housewife whom david petraeus' then mistress paula broadwell apparently saw as rival. a whole new chapter in a saga that since last friday has been one bombshell after another. and so far, all of them have something to do with kelley. she's a volunteer military liaison at the air force base, home of the u.s. central command in tampa, florida. kelley complained to the fbi last spring when paula broadwell was having an affair with petraeus allegedly harassed her with jealous e-mails. petraeus admitted the affair with broadwell but denies any elicit contact with kelley. so does general allen who was scheduled for a senate confirmation hearing this very week to become nato's supreme allied commander. today that's on hold, but he will continue in his position as the investigation continues. and all of that as the pentagon digs through 20,000 to 30,000 pages of e-mails and other communications, many with kelley over a two-year period. >>> each revelation brings 100 new questions and my colleague chris lawrence joins me from the pentagon to

with david petraeus resigning at c.i.a. director. unnamed defense officials say the military is now investigating possibly, quote, inappropriate communications between allen and tampa socialite jill kelley. she had reported getting harassing emails from another woman, paula broadwell. the f.b.i. investigation that followed uncovered broadwell's affair with petraeus. but according to the newest revelations, agents also found extensive contacts between kelley and general allen. the f.b.i. notifieded the pentagon on sunday. last night spokesman george little read a statement from defense secretary leon panetta on a flight to australia. >> today the secretary directed that the matter be referred to the inspector general of the department of defense for investigation. it is now in the hands of the department of the secretary-general. >> brown: early news accounts said allen and kelley exchanged 20,000-30,000 pages of emails and other documents over the last two years. for part of that time the general served as deputy commander at u.s. central command faced at the air force base in tampa
